Service Learning Week 2017
The following was written by Lincoln Social Media Team and published in the Friday Flash.
This week (September 25-29, 2017), all Lincoln High School students (almost 240) participated in Service Learning Week 2017. Groups of students traveled out of town to Chaco, Salta, Córdoba, Tandil and Azul. Additionally, close to 140 students stayed in Buenos Aires and traveled each day to do service work in local schools and communities. These included El Ceibo (the neighbourhood about 50 meters from Lincoln), Nuestra Señora de la Luz, Casa del Niño Amanecer, Asociación Civil Engranajes, Escuela Taller Fátima and Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. New for this year were projects around Lincoln campus. One of these was building an organic garden in partnership with the Reserva ecológica de Vicente López, the Global Issues Network (G.I.N.) program and El Ceibo. In addition, some students formed a media team and some were teacher aides for the elementary school.
Chaco
Lincoln students embarked on a trip to the town of Castelli in Chaco. They distributed donations of food, clothes and shoes. In addition, time was taken to interact with the community in the form of playing games with the children, coloring and arts and crafts. Students and teachers also attended a Toba celebration and danced with them as well as pray for the people in Mexico after the earthquake.
HS students also supported an orphanage, whose task is to shelter, raise and educate orphans and abandoned children.
Salta
HS Students devoted to offer food, clothing, medical supplies and other several donations to the local communities in the area, as well as to interact with the Salteñan residents for mutual cultural enrichment. Both students and teachers work intensively during their week-long stay painting, gardening, woodworking, helping with repairs and distributing the donations to the the area.
Tandil
The students did a variety of hands on projects around the city and some fun activities as well. They painted schools and built wonderful lasting relationships with the community.
Cordoba
Located in Ascochinga, Cordoba, La Lucena is known for its efforts to bridge communities and the environment. During this service trip the students engaged in multiple team building activities, working with the community, going on nature hikes and learning about the environment around them.
Azul
Azul is located at the center of the province, 300 km south of Buenos Aires. It has more than 63,000 inhabitants. Its principal, goods-producing economic activities are agriculture and the raising of cattle for meat exports. Azul is home to the schools of Agronomy and Law of the National University of Central Buenos Aires.
The students devoted this week to paint, build, plant, bring donations but mainly create a positive intercultural exchange with the local community.

HS students were also involved in different local projects:
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Project
Lincoln students visit the school on a weekly basis to support students with English and Science. In addition, Service Learning Week sees maintenance projects undertaken, such as painting.
Nuestra Señora de la Luz Project. Lincoln students created a garden.
El Ceibo
Lincoln’s neighbor across the railroad tracks is a small neighborhood called El Ceibo. Students spent their week painting The students spent their week painting (the two bridges they had already painted before that are the entrance to the neighborhood and 7 houses with very lively colors similar to those of the neighborhood La Boca) and providing community donations.
Casa del Nino Amanecer
La Casa del Niño Amanecer is a place where kids go to get help with their school work. It is also a place where they have different activities to prepare the kids for life. For example, one of them is containment. There is also the pedagogic part and the human part that is to be able to provide tools for the kids so they can have a life with better opportunities and use those tools to continue with life, school, the neighbourhood. Lincoln students helped the school with painting and decoration.
Escuela Taller Fátima
Lincoln students did maintenance projects such as painting, sanding, building plant boxes and they also got know the students at the school.
Asociación Civil Engranajes
It provides young people with different workshops such as music and art to help them in life. Lincoln students were there painting the chairs and desks as well as sanding and painting the walls of the rooms. Students learnt how to interact with the community and help people.
Lincoln Organic Garden
Students and Faculty members in the Service Learning local environmental team explained how they plan to create an organic garden for the Lincoln Community using recycled wood to make “Raised Beds” for planting. Once these beds are in place, the Global Issues Network (G.I.N.) program plans on using organic materials to make a garden and transform the whole area, ultimately changing the landscape of our beloved school.
Lincoln Elementary School Teacher Aides
The teacher helpers in elementary along with their students told us and most importantly showed us how their presence changes the environment of Elementary classes. Creating new relationships was a very important lesson to learn in Service Learning week.
Clean up the Beach
